MODULE FOR MANAGING DIARRHOEA IN THE COMMUNITY
About This Course
Introduction
Diarrhoeal diseases remain a major public health concern, particularly in children under five years of age, and are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many communities. Despite being largely preventable and treatable, diarrhoea continues to pose significant challenges due to limited access to clean water, poor sanitation, and inadequate health education.
This module is designed to equip healthcare workers, community health volunteers, and caregivers with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively prevent, identify, and manage diarrhoea at the community level. It emphasizes simple, life-saving interventions that can significantly reduce complications and deaths associated with diarrhoeal diseases.
Participants will learn about:
- The causes and types of diarrhoea
- Risk factors and modes of transmission
- Recognition of danger signs and dehydration levels
- Proper use of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and zinc supplementation
- Home-based care and feeding practices during diarrhoeal episodes
- Preventive measures including hygiene, sanitation, and safe water practices
- When and how to refer patients for advanced medical care
By the end of this module, learners will be able to confidently manage diarrhoea cases within the community, educate caregivers, and contribute to reducing the burden of diarrhoeal diseases through effective prevention and early intervention strategies.
This course supports broader public health efforts to strengthen community-based healthcare systems and improve child survival outcomes.
