About This Course

Maternal and perinatal deaths remain critical public health concerns, particularly in low-resource and community settings. Many of these deaths are preventable through timely identification of risks, improved access to quality healthcare, and effective community-level interventions. Monitoring these deaths is essential to understanding their causes and implementing strategies to prevent future occurrences.

This module focuses on strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers, community health volunteers, and stakeholders to effectively identify, report, review, and respond to maternal and perinatal deaths within the community. It emphasizes a systematic and collaborative approach to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Participants will learn about:

  • The definitions and key concepts of maternal and perinatal deaths
  • Common causes and contributing factors
  • The importance of early detection and timely reporting
  • Community-based approaches to death surveillance and notification
  • Conducting verbal autopsies and case reviews
  • Developing and implementing community response strategies
  • Strengthening referral systems and preventive interventions

By the end of this module, learners will be equipped to actively participate in maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) processes, contribute to data-driven decision-making, and support interventions that improve the survival and well-being of mothers and newborns.

This course supports national and global efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and to ensure safe pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood care for all.
