MODULE ON COMMUNITY-BASED SURVEILLANCE
Community-Based Surveillance (CBS) is a vital public health strategy that enables the early detection and reporting of diseases and health events directly within communities. By actively involving community members and health workers, CBS strengthens the ability of health systems to identify, monitor, and respond to potential health threats in a timely and effective manner.
This module is designed to equip healthcare workers, community health volunteers, and stakeholders with the knowledge and practical skills needed to implement and support surveillance activities at the community level. It emphasizes the importance of early warning systems, accurate reporting, and coordinated response to prevent disease outbreaks and protect public health.
Participants will learn about:
The concept and importance of community-based surveillance
Priority diseases and conditions for surveillance
Methods for case identification and reporting
Use of simple tools for data collection and communication
Roles and responsibilities of community health workers and volunteers
Strategies for community engagement and awareness
Linkages between community surveillance and the national health system
By the end of this module, learners will be able to effectively participate in surveillance activities, recognize unusual health events, and ensure timely reporting and response to protect their communities.
