About This Course

Respiratory diseases are among the most common causes of illness and death worldwide, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and vulnerable populations in communities. Conditions such as acute respiratory infections, pneumonia, asthma, and chronic respiratory diseases can significantly impact quality of life if not identified and managed early.

This module is designed to equip healthcare workers, community health volunteers, and caregivers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively recognize, manage, and prevent respiratory diseases at the community level. It emphasizes early detection, appropriate care, and timely referral to reduce complications and improve patient outcomes.

Participants will learn about:

  • The common types of respiratory diseases and their causes
  • Risk factors and modes of transmission
  • Recognition of key symptoms and danger signs (e.g., difficulty breathing, persistent cough, fast breathing)
  • Basic assessment and management techniques at the community level
  • Preventive measures including vaccination, hygiene, and environmental control
  • Appropriate use of medications and supportive care
  • When and how to refer severe cases to healthcare facilities

By the end of this module, learners will be able to confidently support the management of respiratory conditions within their communities, educate individuals and families on prevention strategies, and contribute to reducing the burden of respiratory diseases.

This course supports efforts to strengthen community-based healthcare systems and improve overall respiratory health outcomes.
